In this week's edition of The Green Room, Cam chats to Grant Norsworthy, bass guitarist of the Paul Colman Trio. Having recently released his first solo album, Resident Alien, Grant talks about his faith, travels and the experience of finally creating a CD of his own songs!
Having always dreamed of being involved in the creative songwriting process, Grant describes how this aspect of himself felt limited as a part of the trio, due to Paul's songwriting talent; as a result, Grant developed a collection of unwritten songs that eventually formed the basis of Resident Alien.
The title, as Grant describes, has a threefold meaning; as a resident of America, he and his family are 'aliens' in a legal sense, and also like foreigners in both America and in their home country of Australia. Grant's final reason is due to his status as a follower of Christ, which sets us apart in many ways from the goals and motivations of the world.
The songs on the album are mostly written by Grant himself, though some are a result of collaboration, even with Paul Colman himself; Grant goes on to mention the benefits of a joint-effort, which can ultimately create a richer songwriting experience. The process was more hectic than simply creating songs, and involved budgets, time-scales and even playing host of instruments by himself!
After manufacturing the disc in the nick of time, Grant tells of his feelings of elation and suspense as he held the disc for the first time.
Unsure of his plans for 2012, Grant suggests writing a devotional book, but concludes that he will try to communicate what God has done through him in any medium possible, whether through song, writing or speaking.
