Light FM traces its origins back to the 1970s. 1977 - An interim committee consisting of Founding Chairman Ray Taylor, David Freeman and others meet to plan the launch of Melbourne Christian Radio. 1978 - Melbourne Christian Radio launches through the assistance of New Life newspaper at the Easter Belgrave Heights Convention. Statements of interest received from some 4,000 people. During the 1980s Melbourne Christian Radio conducts test broadcasts and explores creative ways to include Christian content on Melbourne radio. 1980 - Melbourne Christian Radio incorporates as a not-for-profit company and conducts first test broadcast over 3 days. 1981 - Second test broadcast. 1982 - Third test broadcast, this time lasting seven days. 1983 - Melbourne Christian Radio purchases airtime on 3DB (now Mix 101.1) and airs a Christian program on Sundays. 1989 - After much discussion and prayerful consideration, Melbourne Christian Radio welcomes the infusion of other Christian groups interested in radio ministry in Melbourne. From the 1990s Melbourne Christian Radio changes its name and adopts a broader-based approach to its program content. 1990 - Melbourne Christian Radio changes its name to Triple Seven Communications Inc, appoints its inaugural General Manager Bruce Upton and opens offices in Glen Waverley. 1992 - 1998 - Triple Seven conducts various test broadcasts, culminating with a six-week broadcast in October and November 1998. 1997 - Temporary broadcast facilities established at Level 1, 673 Whitehorse Road, Mont Albert and shared with other community license aspirant groups. 1998 - Australian Broadcasting Authority meets with all Melbourne community broadcast aspirant groups. 2000 - The Australian Broadcasting Authority determines that a final allocation of four Melbourne-wide community licenses will be made. Two city-wide FM licenses are available along with a city-wide AM license and a lower power inner city FM license. 2001 - Triple Seven, led by Chairman George Morgan, presents at the community license hearing on 14 August 2001 with a preference for a city-wide FM license. 2001 Triple Seven conducts a final three month test broadcast and is on air during the events of September 11. The ABA advises Triple Seven that no further test broadcasts will be permitted pending the granting of permanent licenses. On Wednesday 19 December 2001 Triple Seven Communications Inc is awarded one of two Melbourne-wide FM community licenses - on a frequency of 89.9 - and has 12 months to commence full-time service. 2002 - In August a refit of temporary studios and offices at 673 Whitehorse Road, Mont Albert commences using mostly second hand equipment. In September the on-air name 89.9 Light FM is chosen with the positioning statement 'good friends, great music and a message of hope' linking to an earlier test broadcast slogan; 'You've got a friend'. A launch date of Sunday 1 December is set. In October a deal is finalised to site Light FM on the GTV 9 Tower on Mt Dandenong. A 5kw Nortel transmitter (with 30kW ERP) is fitted in early November. On Friday 15 November at 10.00am Light FM commences a week of mandatory interference testing to be ready for launch on Sunday 1 December. On Sunday December 1 2002, at one second past midnight, 89.9 Light FM launches with a montage of previous test broadcasts. Light FM has been broadcasting 24 hours a day, seven days a week since. 2003 - In March Light FM gains the approval of the Shire of Yarra Ranges for its link dish on the GTV 9 tower and links the studio and transmitter site via microwave link. In June, Light FM's premises are sold from Christian owners to a developer. From August plans are made to buy an old church building in Nottinghill and convert it into a radio station. In November, Light FM's new landlord offers to refit the ground floor of 673 Whitehorse Road to our specifications, effectively free of charge, on the same day that our plans to move to Nottinghill are thwarted by local council objections. Light FM launches its website www.lightfm.com.au 2004 - In March, Light FM takes up full occupancy of the purpose-fitted ground floor of 673 Whitehorse Road 2004 Triple Seven Communications Inc becomes Light FM Inc by unanimous vote at the Annual General Meeting. 2005 - Light FM's stylises its logo to emphasise its frequency 89.9. The positioning statement remains 'good friends, great music and a message of hope.'
