The Road

Date: Friday 17th February, 2012
Time: 12:01 AM

Brief:

Young adults are leaving the Church and faith in droves. 80% who grow up in Church leave by the time they finish their education. This raises big questions about the future of faith in Australia.

Uber are passionate about this very issue and are putting on an event Feb 17-18 2012, The Road. Its a weekend (Fri night, SaturDAY) that will challenge the cultural myths that shape our lives and dissolve our faith and reawaken the life God calls us to. This event is designed for young adults and those who lead them...or for those who are simply trying to understand the times we live in.

Speakers include Mark Sayers, Sarah Deutscher, Andrew Shamy, Tim Hein.

Detailed:

The concept of the journey has come to dominate our language when describing our spiritual lives. In the past, concrete words like devotion, commitment and obedience were everywhere. But now the way we understand our faith seems more fluid, transient, fragile.

Young adult faith has become something that is in process, ‘under construction.’ We have become people of The Road; refugees of faith;  tourists in search of meaning. Our lives are a journey and we are the travellers.

Jesus speaks of this road as wide and smooth. It is the easy road with multi-laned convenience.  The road in which personal freedom is the lure, where we never commit, and our lives offer a never ending exploration of pleasures. This is life in the fast lane. This is the road of the comfortable, and many people find it. Jesus also describes another road. It’s a narrow one. It is not well paved. It’s uncomfortable; filled with stones and obstacles. It is a rarely trodden road, few find it - but this is the road that leads to life. This is the road of pilgrims sure of their destination. Many of us have by-passed this road. Lured by the thrill of the journey and comfortable ride we have exited the narrow road and few are left.* We need to re-discover the narrow road. We need to be reminded of the destination. We need to take the path less trodden and show our world there is another way.

This is an invitation to those seeking to find and travel the narrow road. It is a unique opportunity to understand the new faith of the road and to re-assess the direction we are traveling and to re-discover the riches of the destination.
