The Best Appliance EVER

Reference: v.13 When you cry out for help,
let your collection of idols save you!
The wind will carry all of them off,
a mere breath will blow them away.
But whoever takes refuge in me
will inherit the land and possess my holy mountain. (TNIV Bible)
Explore: We recently purchased a robotic vacuum cleaner. I absolutely loathe vacuuming and when we had to buy a new machine we found an automatic cleaner on special.
This disc-shaped appliance moves around the room collecting dust and dirt. When it comes to an obstacle it will turn around and start cleaning in the other direction.
I love this little machine so much that I have even affectionately nicknamed it ‘RoboCop’ because my dirty floors are criminal!
RoboCop is so amazing that I started raving about it when a friend came over the other day. She was asking whether it did a decent job and I boldly proclaimed, “It’s the best appliance I have EVER bought!”
Now I don’t know what life would be like without RoboCop in it.
Application: It’s amazing how attached we can get to the things in our lives. I have so many creature comforts around me that I have come to rely upon them.
However, Isaiah 57 has reminded me that no possession of this world can truly give us the comfort and support that we need in times of trouble.
When my father passed away, I did not find solace from my car; when I suddenly had to leave my job, I did not find support from my fridge; and when I realised we could not conceive naturally, I did not find peace from my hair dryer.
Our possessions can make our life a little easier, but the deeper needs we have are met by God. He is the ultimate source of solace, support and peace.
We don’t need to strip ourselves of all our possessions, but we must keep them in check and make sure we rely solely on our Saviour who provides for all our needs.
Prayer: Lord, you are the source of all things right, true and good. May we not depend on the things of this world but look to You for all that we need. Amen.
What possession do you own that you would struggle to live without? How can you keep God as the dominant One you depend upon?
