Statement on the Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey

Article data

Main article content

89.9 LightFM is a radio station licenced to serve the Christian community and those interested in spirituality. The station is made up of individuals; consisting of staff, volunteers, members, sponsors, donors and listeners. During the upcoming Australian Marriage Law postal survey, 89.9 LightFM, as an organisation, doesn’t have a vote and won’t be espousing an opinion on how anyone should vote. On the other hand, every registered voter has an opportunity to have their say.

As a community radio station that has ‘authentic’ and ‘inclusive’ among its core values, we believe its role during the Australian Marriage Law postal survey is to ‘inform and inspire’ listeners, in line with being Melbourne’s Positive Alternative.

89.9 LightFM will provide information for individuals to best inform their decision. This will originate from news bulletins, from any special features and/or programs run on the station.

89.9 LightFM aims to inspire in three ways.

  • Firstly, via respect. The station believes a healthy society allows, and can handle, disagreement. Where disagreement occurs, the station would call on everyone to be respectful of the other person(s) and their right to their opinion.
  • Secondly, by asking and inspiring all listeners to ‘envisage the best Australia going forward and vote according to their conscience’. 89.9 LightFM encourages everyone to ask themselves the question “What is best for individuals, families and future generations?”.
  • Thirdly, by calling on every listener to show love, care and continued respect for one another. The outcome of the postal survey will mean some are delighted with the outcome and some are extremely disappointed. 89.9 LightFM encourages everyone to show love, grace, kindness and continued respect for everyone who is moved and passionate about this vote and potential legislation.

Finally, listeners are called on to pray for wisdom, not only for themselves, but also for their parliamentarians both now, and as they shape the future of Australia.
